TEEN ART COMPETITION PUTS NORTH VALLEY YOUTH TALENTS ON DISPLAY

7th Annual Competition held by the Arts Council of the North Valley

Hundreds of visitors were greatly impressed by the artistic talents of visual fine art students from five area high schools and one charter school at the 7th Annual ACNV Regional Teen Art Competition and Exhibit presented by the Arts Council of the North Valley (ACNV) on April 28 and 29, 2012. 

"We were thrilled with the response to the exhibit," said Willine Evans, event chair.  "People were amazed that the artwork was done by high school students and not professional artists!"

Students from Barry Goldwater, Boulder Creek, Deer Valley, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Sunrise Mountain high schools, as well as the Anthem Visual Art Academy, competed for honors, their artwork having been selected by their respective schools.  The exhibit was judged by Linda Pullinsi, Youth Academy Program Manager at Scottsdale Artists' School.

“One of ACNV’s foremost commitments is to arts education for North Valley youth,” stated Jon Meyers, executive director of the Arts Council of the North Valley. “Through the Regional Teen Art Competition we are able to not only display the incredible talents of the region’s young artists, but also encourage their further education and development.”

Best in Show for 2012 was awarded to Taylor Main of Sandra Day O’Connor High School for her pencil portrait of Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra, entitled “Anchors Aweigh”. Taylor, a student of Jason Lohmeier at Sandra Day O'Connor, received a gift certificate for $300 from the Scottsdale Artists' School, a gift card for $75 from Arizona Art Supply, and an artist portfolio from ACNV.

The Award of Excellence went to Claudia Lanese of Boulder Creek for her acrylic painting, “Oranges”.  Andrea is a student of Hillary Warren and received a gift certificate for $200 from the Scottsdale Artists' School, a gift card of $50 from Arizona Art Supply, and an artist portfolio from ACNV.

Ten students from Boulder Creek, Deer Valley, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Sunrise Mountain were awarded Honorable Mention. Each of these winners received an artist portfolio from ACNV.

Best in Show recipient Taylor Main also received the People's Choice Award.

The Regional Teen Art Competition was made possible with the support of  The Caepe School, Scottsdale Artists' School, Arizona Art Supply, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Ida G. and Stanley T. Halbreich Foundation, the USAA Foundation, and ACNV members and volunteers.
